Martyn Bailey is a highly skilled dual qualified Psychologist based on the Isle of Wight. Martyn offers face to face appointments from his private clinic but also specialises in remote therapy options for clients who prefer modalities such as online via zoom or over the phone.
Martyn is a Health and Care Professionals Council registered (n.PYL041146) and a Chartered Sport & Exercise Psychologist (British Psychological Society). Martyn is also a BABCP and AREBT registered Cognitive Behavioural Therapist working within the National Health Service (NHS).
Martyn originally started out with professional tennis experience which led to a passion for how psychological factors influence professional and amateur sport. Martyn completed a BSc (Hons) in Psychology at the University of Derby and then a MSc in Sport & Exercise Psychology at Staffordshire University.
While studying current research in the sporting domain it became clear that too often interventions were just designed to treat the surface level of an athlete’s problem. While sometimes this can work just fine, other times athletes needed more complex work that often overlapped with their everyday life. Martyn wanted to further his psychological knowledge so has completed the Postgraduate certificate in Low-Intensity CBT Interventions at the University of Birmingham and the Postgraduate Diploma in Cognitive- Behavioural Therapy at the University of Reading. Martyn has recently gained the Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy for Long Term Health conditions award from the University of Southampton. This has resulted in over 1000 hours of work for the NHS, working with patients facing mental health difficulties such as Depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD, OCD to list a few.
Martyn completed his stage 2 training with the BPS and was able to use his clinical knowledge to study conditions such as the Yips and Lost Movement Syndrome. These are movement-based disorders often exacerbated when anxiety is higher. There is currently little knowledge of how to treat this using traditional sport psychology methods as unfortunately the issue often presents itself with deeper clinical routes like that of someone suffering with PTSD and therefore clinical experience is a necessity for helping to treat this stubborn condition.
Martyn uses a variety of treatment methods and therapeutic styles and will always discuss the treatment options with each client to pick which one may be the best fit. Some of the techniques and protocols that are commonly used but not exhaustive include Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
Martyn currently runs a successful private practice alongside his NHS work and would like to hear from you if you require help with a mental health condition or have a sporting issue that you would like to work on.
Away from work Martyn is still a keen tennis player and has competed in the Natwest International Island Games. Martyn also dedicates a lot of his non work time to the sport of Beach tennis and recently competed for Great Britain at the 2024 Beach Tennis World Championships in Sardinia. He also enjoys visiting and taking in the unique cultures of other small islands of the world when he can get time off work and when of course his cats allow him to!!!
