FAQ: Sport & Exercise Psychology- Isle of Wight

What does a Sport & Exercise Psychologist do?

A Sport Psychologist helps athletes and active individuals improve focus, confidence and resilience. I use proven psychological strategies to manage performance anxiety, build motivation and enhance overall enjoyment of sport.

Do I have to be an elite athlete to benefit?

Not at all. I work with clients of all levels- from recreational athletes to professionals. Many people come for support around motivation, returning to exercise, or managing confidence in competition.

How is sport psychology different from coaching or counselling?

Sport psychology focuses on mental skills and mindset for performance, while counselling often focuses on emotional wellbeing. Because I’m also a BABCP-accredited CBT therapist, I can integrate both- addressing performance blocks and deeper emotional factors if needed.

Can sessions take place at my training venue or competition?

Yes. Whenever possible, I like to work with athletes in real environments- such as a court, track or training facility- to observe and apply techniques in context. We’ll always discuss and agree this in advance.

How long does a sport psychology programme last?

It depends on your goals. Some athletes benefit from a few targeted sessions before an event, while others prefer an ongoing performance development plan across a season.

Do you offer online sessions for athletes outside of the Isle of Wight?

Yes. I work with clients both in person and remotely across the UK and internationally. Online sessions allow you to access performance psychology support wherever you’re based.

What kind of issues can you help athletes with?

Common areas include:

  • Performance anxiety or “the yips”
  • Confidence and motivation
  • Dealing with injury or return to sport
  • Managing pressure and self-talk
  • Transitioning out of sport or changing roles.
